In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
