The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
