This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
